Did you know that July is the busiest travel month of the year? From the Fourth of July holiday to summer family vacations, honeymoons after June weddings, and even business trips, people are traveling all across the United States and beyond.
Whether you're traveling solo, with a companion, or with your whole family, here are some tips to make sure you're prepared before you leave and when you arrive:
- Do your research: Plan ahead, read up on your destination, learn about their customs, and what’s normal for the area. This is especially important if you’re traveling abroad. Even checking the weather can help you know how to pack smartly.
- Stay aware: From the moment you leave home, keep your situational awareness high. Be alert to anyone around you who might be up to no good, whether they’re looking to steal your credit card info or your belongings. Trust your gut and stay cautious.
- Be social media smart: Don’t post that you’re leaving for a trip until you’re back home. Posting in real time can alert people that your house is empty or give potential thieves your travel itinerary. It’s just as fun to share your photos when you return.
- Know your safety tools: If you’re traveling outside the country or on a cruise, check what safety devices are legal. Even within the U.S., there are restrictions on items like stun devices and pepper spray. If you have questions, feel free to ask me for advice.
- Prep your car: If you’re driving, make sure your car is equipped with safety tools like an emergency flashlight, a glass breaker, a seatbelt cutter, and jumper cables. You never know when you might need them or be able to help someone else.
- Be cautious at check-in: When checking into your hotel, stay alert to who’s around. Someone might be trying to get your name or steal credit card information, especially if you’re a lone female traveler.
- Secure your accommodation: Once in your hotel room or Airbnb, check everything carefully. Ensure windows are locked, especially on the ground floor. Consider using an additional door lock and door/window alarm for added security. You never know how often the Airbnb passwords are changed.
- Keep someone informed: Let a safe adult at home know your whereabouts and give them emergency contact numbers for yourself and your accommodation.
- Protect your drinks: If you’re drinking alcohol, or even just soft drinks, consider using a cup cover. Always watch your drink being poured and keep it covered to avoid being slipped something.
- Guard your info: Use an RFID-blocking purse or wallet to protect your credit card information. Consider a hidden safe for your cards, extra jewelry, or money in your hotel room. Avoid using the hotel room safe as you never know who has access.
